〈春の雪に煙る〉
8年前の今日2017年4月22日。本州では桜が散り終えた頃だけれど、北海道の山中はまだ冬のつづきにあった。
国道に車を走らせていると、路肩から一頭のキタキツネが現れた。人から食べ物をもらった経験がある個体にありがちな行動で、こちらに向かって歩み寄ってくる。運転に気を使わせるキツネだ。
朝から湿った雪が降り続き、糠平湖の対岸に立つタウシュベツ川橋梁は白い幕の向こうにぼんやり霞んでいる。5月の連休明けまで、この辺りでは夏タイヤに替えられない。

Eight years ago today, April 22, 2017, even though the cherry blossoms had already finished in mainland Japan, winter was still hanging on in this part of Hokkaido.
Driving along the highway, I had to slow down when a red fox stepped out onto the shoulder. This kind of bold behavior often suggests the fox has been fed by people, so it’s used to approaching cars.
Since early morning, wet snow had been falling nonstop. The Taushubetsu Bridge on the far side of Lake Nukabira was faintly shrouded in a white haze. Up here, we can’t safely switch to summer tires until after the early-May holiday – a reminder that in these mountains, winter can linger much longer than you’d expect.
