＜橋もまた冬眠から目を覚ます＞
13年前の今日、2012年4月21日。
暦では春だとはいえ、糠平湖はまだ分厚い氷に覆われ、風景はまだ冬とあまり変わらない様子だった。
とはいえ湖面をよく見ると、ところどころで茶色い湖底が顔をのぞかせている。雪と氷の下から土の色がわずか見えるだけでも、北国ではどこか春めいて感じられるから不思議だ。
森の奥で厳寒をしのいでいたキタキツネの姿も、よく見かけるようになる。この時期は、辺りの景色全体が冬眠から静かに息を吹き返していくようだ。
雪が解け、氷がゆるむこの時期に、一年でもっともコンクリートの劣化があらわになるタウシュベツ川橋梁。10年以上を遡るこの頃でも、すでに橋脚下には砂れきが落ちていたことが分かる。
Thirteen years ago today—April 21, 2012—the calendar said spring, but Lake Nukabira still looked like winter. A thick sheet of ice covered the water and everything was quiet and white.
Look closer, though, and you could spot patches of brown earth peeking through the snow and ice. Up here, even that small hint of color feels like a promise of spring.
Red foxes, which spend the deep‑freeze months hidden in the forest, had started to show themselves again. The whole place seemed to be waking up from hibernation.
This thawing season is also when the concrete of the Taushubetsu Bridge shows its worst scars. Even back then, more than ten years ago, small piles of gravel were already gathering at the base of the arches—proof that the bridge was slowly wearing away.
