〈橋が静かに凍るとき〉
2013年1月10日、今から12年前の朝は夜明け前から静けさのなかでタウシュベツ川橋梁を撮影していました。
この年は糠平湖の水位が高く、氷上に見えているのは全体のほんの一部だけ。何が写っているのか、橋を知っていなければずいぶんと謎の多い写真のはずです。
空一面に広がっていた星が消えると、東の空に細い月が昇ってきました。
湖面に張った氷はすでに30センチ近い厚さになっていました。年や場所によって氷の色合いが微妙に違うのは、氷中の不純物によると言われています。空気などがうまく抜けながらできた氷ほど、光の加減で青く見えるようです。
橋に圧し掛かる氷は、橋を飲み込む波のようにも見えます。冬の水位が低いことが多いここ数年は、こうした場面に出会うこともなくなりました。
割れた氷の断面をのぞくと、その透き通った青のなかに無数の気泡が閉じ込められいました。当時はまだ、「アイスバブル」という呼び名もあまり広まっていませんでした。糠平湖のアイスバブルが広く知られるようになるのは、2019年以降のことです。
雪原に朝日が当たり始めると、まだ付いたばかりのキタキツネの足跡が一筋残っていました。暗がりのなかで、もしかするとすれ違っていたのかもしれません。
On January 10, 2013, twelve years ago, I started my morning before dawn, quietly photographing The Taushubetsu Bridge amidst the serene silence of nature. That year, Lake Nukabira's water levels were unusually high, leaving only a small part of the bridge visible above the ice. To anyone unfamiliar with the bridge, the images might seem shrouded in mystery.
As dawn broke and the night sky began to lighten, the stars gradually faded from view.
The ice on the lake was nearly 30 centimeters thick. The color variations in the ice, subtly different each year and depending on the location, are believed to be due to impurities. Ice that forms while efficiently releasing trapped air tends to exhibit a bluish hue in certain light conditions.
The ice, pressing against the bridge, seemed like waves engulfing it. In recent years, such scenes have become rare, as winter water levels are generally lower.
Peering into the fractured ice, I saw countless bubbles trapped within its translucent blue. At that time, the term "ice bubbles" was not widely known. It wasn’t until 2019 that ice bubbles in Lake Nukabira gained widespread recognition.
As the morning sun began to light up the snowy landscape, I noticed a fresh trail of fox tracks. Perhaps I had just missed crossing paths in the darkness.
