In Hokkaido, the onset of early winter might just bring the most rapid and dramatic changes to the landscape throughout the seasons. It's a period when even during the day, temperatures struggle to rise above freezing, marking the arrival of the true winter days. This phase, lasting only a few weeks to about a month, is characterized by a mesmerizing blend of water and ice. The scenery transforms every day, sometimes even within a matter of hours. In this ever-changing tableau, one never encounters the same scene twice.
For this reason, I have encapsulated these scenes in my work, terming them 'Once-upon-a-winter.' Each encounter with this landscape is unique, never to be replicated, much like a fleeting moment captured in time.
北海道の四季を通じて、景色の変化がもっとも速くそして劇的なのはこの時期かもしれません。
それは、日中でも気温がプラスにならない真冬日が訪れ、水と氷とが入り混じるわずか数週間から1カ月間ほど。
一日ごとに、あるいは数時間のうちにも移り変わっていく光景。同じ場面に繰り返し出会うことはありません。
